Rooibos has been used for centuries by the indigenous Khoisan people of South Africa, who prized the plant for its medicinal qualities, brewing it to treat ailments such as colic, asthma, and skin conditions. The name “rooibos” means “red bush” referring to the deep red colour the leaves take on after fermentation.
European settlers in the 18th century first documented rooibos, but it remained largely a local herbal remedy until the early 20th century. In the 1930s, Dr. Pieter Le Fras Nortier, a botanist, played a pivotal role in domesticating the wild plant and developing cultivation methods, transforming rooibos into a commercial crop.
Since then, rooibos has grown from a regional specialty into an internationally beloved tea, celebrated not only for its unique flavour but also for its health benefits.
