The name, English Breakfast reflects its origin as a morning staple in our British culture, designed to complement the traditional English breakfast and provide a strong start to the day. Queen Victoria was said to have played a key role in popularising English Breakfast tea during the 19th century. No-one is quite sure of the exact origins of the blend but it is believed that an early version of the tea was created in Scotland and later brought to Queen Victoria’s attention during a visit to Balmoral Castle. She enjoyed the strong, rich flavour so much that it gained favour in royal circles and became associated with the traditional British breakfast. Her influence has helped ensure English Breakfast tea is a staple in our British tea culture.

Health Benefits

All tea originates from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis, but the final product varies in style, taste, and caffeine content depending on how it is processed.

Black tea, which undergoes full oxidation, has a lower concentration of polyphenols compared to green tea, but it has a higher caffeine and tannin content. Despite concerns about tannins, research shows that the levels present in tea do not appear to have any harmful effects on the body. In fact, black tea offers several health benefits, including:

  • Improved heart health
  • Better gut health
  • Enhanced focus

It also contains antioxidants such as theaflavins and thearubigins, which help combat oxidative stress. Also, tea is rich in the amino acid L-theanine, which is known for promoting relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety without causing drowsiness.
